Specification – Edexcel

A Level Theatre Studies approaches the subject from both a practical and theoretical point
of view, and involves the analysis of a wide range of plays from a production perspective.
Students will visit and evaluate a number of contemporary productions as part of the
course. The subject has become more popular at A-Level over recent years as it
compliments many others, especially those in the Arts and Humanities area. Students who
study the subject develop an in depth knowledge of theatre, while also increasing in
confidence and improving their communication skills.

Unit 1 – Live Theatre Production Seen and Prescribed Play

This unit is divided into two sections, each being assessed separately in the final AS
examinations. Section A focuses on candidates’ personal responses to various aspects of
live theatre seen during the course, while Section B focuses on the interpretation of a play
from a performance perspective.

Unit 2 – Presentation of an Extract from a Play

This unit is internally assessed and externally moderated. Students work in groups to
present an extract from a published play for an audience. Each group of students is
entirely responsible for all aspects of the performance.

Unit 3 – Further Prescribed Plays including Pre-Twentieth Century

This unit revolves around the study of two different set plays. The final examination
requires students to answer two questions which may focus on a variety of issues,
including: actor/audience relationship, the stage setting and design and the creation of
period, style and atmosphere.

Unit 4 – Presentation of Devised Drama

Similar to Unit 2, this unit revolves around students working in groups to present for an
audience a devised drama, performed in a theatrical style of the students’ choice.
